A business coach is a person whose job is to guide you in achieving your goals and aspirations. They will provide insights, advice, and motivation for life’s challenges that arise on the way. The coaching environment allows one to take action steps towards their dreams while working with someone who has been there before them – they have walked in those shoes so they can understand what it takes to get where you want or need be going!
The business coach’s responsibility lies in two dimensions: responsibility to the customer and responsibility to the students.
The business coach has a difficult task: he must correctly define his position so that, on the one hand, he does not lose the customer, and on the other hand, he does not take on the responsibility that does not belong to him. How often does a customer, when hiring a trainer, entrust him with the mission of increasing sales? Or solutions to all, all problems in the company?
Agree, often. And if we turn to reality, what is the zone of influence of the business coach himself? The efficiency of the entire company is influenced by the product itself, price, promotion, location, people, procedures, and the relationship between the company and the consumer.
One-seventh of the whole process! And within the category “People” there is selection, adaptation, assessment, motivation, corporate culture, and, of course, training. This is not a complete list. The result is influenced by both the HR brand of the company and the level of involvement, and the personality of the leader, and the background of the relationship, and many more parameters.
But even if we focus on the main HR processes, then training is only one-sixth of the part that affects the final result of the entire company. I will not deal with counting fractions but understanding this scheme, you begin to see: training is not a panacea. Learning is only part of the system. And the responsibility of the business coach lies within the boundaries of this part.
I believe that the responsibility of the trainer is to discuss and achieve understanding and acceptance of this model by the client at the start. When withdrawing an order, the trainer must analyze not only an explicit request but also reveal a latent need, analyze the general situation in the company. Do you really need training or do you need to change the selection and adaptation system or the system of motivation, or maybe the fact is that the product is not competitive, and the work should be in the procurement area, first of all?
The responsibility of the trainer is not to give false hopes to the customer if he understands that it is not a lack of training for employees, but, for example, unstructured business processes. When a consensus has already been found, specific goals of the training have been identified, then the task and responsibility of the trainer is to select valid, reliable, relevant tools for achieving the goal.
Moreover, we are talking not only about the training itself, but also about the pre-training analysis of the situation, and about post-training support. The responsibility of the trainer is to offer not the solutions, methods, methods that worked for previous customers but to focus specifically on the request and problems of this client.
Another layer of the distribution of responsibility in training is between the trainer and the listener. Of course, ideally fifty-fifty. However, the measure of how much you have to give and how much the listener will take is determined by the established culture of training in the company and the person himself as a person. Thirty to seventy, eighty to twenty – at the entrance, the business coach evaluates this ratio.
And if the training participants have initially low motivation to learn, it is the business coach’s responsibility to make efforts to actualize development, to increase motivation. “A horse can be brought to a watering hole, but you cannot make it drink.” In this phrase, it seems to me, everything is about the delineation of responsibility for training. The trainer is also responsible for the environmental friendliness of training. The principle of medical ethics “Do no harm” can be attributed to our profession as well.
How does the business coach answer to the customer, if the training is held, but “things are still there”, and sales have not increased? Everything will depend on the customer’s loyalty, on the text of the agreement, on the initial agreements. This can be either a reduction in the fee or the loss of a client forever. “But it is not exactly!” – a new meme shouts from the screens. But it is absolutely certain that the coach always responds with his reputation.
And a small image at the end is an illustration of my opinion on the responsibility of a business coach. What is the responsibility of one of the seven notes? What is the responsibility of one color of the seven colors of the rainbow? The responsibility is to, being “one of”, be purely sung, deliciously painted, so that the whole composition sounds harmonious, and the picture shines, as the artists say. It is the coach’s responsibility to do his job effectively and with inspiration as a part of the system! As a part, it becomes a generator of positive transformations both in companies and in the training participants themselves.
